In 1953, the 6098 was renumbered as the 6298 model.

This was the first model to feature the word Explorer on the dial, which was marked Precision rather than Officially Certified Chronometer.

It seems likely that this type of dial was also fitted to some of the watches issued to Sir John Hunt's successful May 1953 Everest expedition.
